Police in Ntcheu have arrested two men, Chisomo Chipoya, 29, and Madalitso Makwinja, 36, for allegedly stealing K1.6 million from passengers they picked up along the road.

According to Ntcheu Police spokesperson Jacob Khembo, the suspects picked up the victims at Lirangwe while pretending to be travelling to Lilongwe, but later dropped them off at Chingeni.

Police say one suspect locked the vehicle doors before his accomplice allegedly stole the money from a bag that had been placed on the back seat while the victims struggled to open the doors.

The suspects reportedly drove back towards Blantyre, but the victims quickly alerted police at Chingeni after discovering the theft.

Officers later mounted a roadblock at Senzani and managed to arrest the two suspects. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of K1,493,000 believed to be part of the stolen money.

Chipoya comes from Mawawa Village in Senior Chief Mwase’s area in Kasungu, while Makwinja comes from Kalembo Village in Balaka.
