Police in Dowa have arrested Aubrey Kabango, 36, on suspicion of sexually assaulting an 15-year-old girl at a lodge within Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
According to Dowa Police spokesperson Alice Sitima, the arrest was made on June 16 following a report from the girl’s mother, who informed police that her daughter had allegedly been sexually abused by a man.
Sitima said that at around 11:00 a.m. on the same day, police received information that Kabango had been seen taking the girl to a guest lodge within the camp. Acting on the tip-off, officers rushed to the premises where they reportedly found the suspect and the girl together in a room.
Police immediately arrested Kabango and took the girl to Dzaleka Health Centre for medical examination. Health officials later confirmed that she had engaged in sexual activity.
Preliminary investigations have established that the two had allegedly been involved in a sexual relationship for some time and that similar encounters had occurred on several occasions.
Kabango comes from Mchepa Village under Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe District. He is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to the alleged offence.
Police have since reiterated the importance of reporting cases of sexual abuse and exploitation to law enforcement authorities.
