Police Rescue Man Accused of Killing His Two Young Sons in Balaka

Police in Balaka have rescued a 27-year-old man, Laston Mbendera, from an angry mob after he was accused of murdering his two young sons.
According to Balaka Police publicist Gladson M’bumpha, the incident occurred on Monday, 29 June 2026, at Zalimau Village under Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka District.
The deceased have been identified as Peace Mbendera, aged 7, and Manic Mbendera, aged 2.
Police say the children’s father, Laston Mbendera, is suspected of killing them. Following the incident, enraged community members surrounded the suspect’s house, intending to take the law into their own hands.
After receiving the report, police officers responded swiftly and rescued the suspect from the mob before taking him into custody.
Police say investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two children, with more details expected to be released as the inquiry progresses.
