Six Arrested for Illegal Mining in Chitipa Forest

Police in Chitipa District have arrested six people for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities in Binoni Forest along the Chambo River under Senior Chief Mwabulambya.
Chitipa Police Station Public Relations Officer Sergeant Rabson Mkandawire said the suspects were arrested on 8 July 2026 following intelligence reports that illegal mining was taking place in the protected forest.
According to Mkandawire, police officers launched an operation in the area and apprehended the suspects at Binoni Village.
The suspects have been identified as Blessings Mwanjawe (34) of Chikwawa, Wyson Mangani (44) of Machinga, John Robert (25) of Pha1lombe, Lazaro Silumbu (29), Clement Sichali (52) and Watson Sikwese (24), all from Chitipa District.
Police say the six are expected to appear before court once all necessary paperwork has been completed.
Authorities have reiterated their warning against illegal mining, saying the practice not only violates the law but also poses serious environmental risks.
