Police in Dowa have arrested a 44-year-old Congolese national, Wilonje Ettando, on suspicion of killing his 22-year-old wife, Mapendo Assan, at Dzaleka Refugee Camp, allegedly after suspecting she was pregnant.
District Police spokesperson Alice Sitima said Wilonje, who resides in Mozambique, became suspicious that his wife was pregnant after arriving at their home in the camp, sparking a dispute between the couple.
According to Sitima, Wilonje later informed relatives that his wife had fallen ill, prompting them to take her to Dzaleka Health Centre, where medical personnel confirmed she was already dead.
However, health workers noticed suspicious injuries on the woman’s body, prompting further investigations. A post-mortem examination later revealed that the deceased was not pregnant.
