A 17-year-old South Korean national, Eugene Enoch Kwon, has died after drowning in Lake Malawi at Cape Maclear in Monkey Bay.
Eastern Region Police spokesperson Patrick Mussa confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on Tuesday while Eugene was in Malawi on an educational trip.
According to Mussa, Eugene was a student at Hampton School in London, United Kingdom. He had travelled to Malawi as part of an educational visit accompanied by four teachers and 19 fellow students.
“On the morning of the incident, the group went snorkelling in Lake Malawi. During the activity, Eugene was reported missing, prompting an immediate search operation. After an extensive search, divers located his body underwater,” Mussa said.
Police said Eugene’s body was taken to Monkey Bay Community Hospital, where a post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.
Authorities have since informed his family and are working with the relevant officials to facilitate the necessary procedures following the tragedy.
