The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lilongwe has convicted and sentenced 40-year-old to 21 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for having sexual intercourse with three girls aged 14, 10 and 14 between May and June 2026.
Deputy Spokesperson for Lilongwe Police Khumbo Sanyiwa has confirmed the case and identified the convict as Kupata Chikanga.
The court heard from State Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Kandeya of Lilongwe Police that the convict committed the offences between May and June 2026.
The convict, who is the grandfather of the victims, lured them into engaging in sexual acts by giving each of them K500 whenever they visited his house.
In June 2026, the parents of one of the victims were informed that their daughter had been seen visiting the convict’s house at around 1900 hours.
When questioned, the girl initially told her parents that she had gone there to eat rice. However, she later disclosed that the convict had been having sexual intercourse with her and further revealed that two other girls had also been sexually abused by him.
The matter was subsequently reported to Lilongwe Police, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Investigations further established that one of the victims was one month pregnant.
Appearing before the court, Chikanga pleaded guilty to three counts of defilement. In mitigation, he asked the court for leniency, saying he was a first-time offender.
However, in his submission, Assistant Superintendent Kandeya prayed for a stiff custodial sentence, citing the seriousness of the offences and the need to protect children from sexual abuse.
Passing his sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Gracious Kondowe observed that the victims were minors and therefore incapable of giving lawful consent to sexual intercourse. He further noted that the offences had caused lasting physical and psychological harm to the victims.
The court consequently sentenced Chikanga to 21 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Chikanga hails fromn Kanong’ona Village, Traditional Authority Mbwatalika in Lilongwe District.
