A Tanzanian speedboat carrying seven people, including four Dutch nationals and three crew members, has reportedly gone missing on Lake Malawi.
Senior Assistant Surveyor of Vessels in Nkhata Bay, Chikosa Mkandawire, confirmed the development on Monday morning.
According to Mkandawire, the boat departed Mbamba Bay in Tanzania for Nkhata Bay in Malawi at around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Malawian authorities were alerted after the vessel failed to arrive at its destination as scheduled and no communication had been received from those on board.
“Our officers launched a search and rescue operation at 5:00 p.m. yesterday and continued searching until this morning without locating the boat. Tanzanian authorities have since informed us that the vessel has been located at Luwiru. Rescue operations involving both Malawian and Tanzanian authorities are continuing,” said Mkandawire.
Meanwhile, Malawi Defence Force Navy personnel are reportedly en route to join the ongoing search and rescue operation.
This is a developing story. More details will follow as they become available.
