Police in Nsanje have arrested a 24-year-old woman, Stella Siliva, on suspicion of dumping her newborn baby in a latrine.
Nsanje Police spokesperson Jabulani Ng’oma said the woman’s husband left for South Africa four years ago. Police allege that she later entered into a relationship with another man, became pregnant, and concealed the pregnancy.
According to police, when she went into labour, she went to a latrine at a local school, gave birth, and allegedly left the newborn in the pit.
The baby was later discovered alive by passersby, who rushed the infant to hospital. However, the baby died while receiving medical treatment.
