Right activists Edward Kambanje defends Namathanga’s MK1.5 billion settlement by RBM

Well-known human right activists Edward Kambanje has defended the Reserve Bank of Malawi’s (RBM) move to settle its Deputy Governor Dr. Henry Mathanga MK1.5 billion following his reinstatement after years out of office.
The move has sparked debate among Malawians with some questioning the rationale behind the easy settlement of the stated amount.
In a statement made available to this publication, Kambanje said the matter should be understood as the implementation of a court decision rather than political favour.
“The court has already spoken. It found that the unilateral reduction of Dr. Mathanga’s Salary was unlawful and amounted to unfair labour practice. The court made it crystal clear that you cannot correct one alleged wrong by committing another wrong.
“Yet, instead of respecting the judgement, some people declared war on the very victim whose rights the court found had been violated,” said Kambanje.
Kambanje went further to claim that that the 2025 Industrial Court ruling did not apply to Mathanga’s alone, saying several RBM officials were affected by the same salary reductions and have also sought or received remedies arising from the court’s decision.
He has since urged the public not to politicize the issue.
