A 22-year-old boy in Lilongwe has died after drowning into a swimming pool at friend’s birthday party.
Lilongwe police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula has identified the deceased as Shamm Chitibu who hailed from Mmanja village in the area of traditional authority Ganya in Ntcheu.
According to Dandaula, the father of the boy, Mr. Isaac Chitibu reported to police that on 21 April 2018, his son and 19 of his friends went to Kortarsia Lodge where they were celebrating the birthday of a fellow friend identified as Aubrey Phiri.
“After swimming everyone went to the cake table which was two meters away from the swimming pool but the deceased remained behind, “said Dandaula.
Upon seeing that their friend was taking long to join them on the cake table, Shamm’s friends went to the pool site to look for him but they were shocked after seeing him unconscious in the pool.
In efforts to save his life, his friends rushed him to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A postmortem done at the said hospital revealed that the death was due to suffocation.
