Mutharika fires warning shots at foreigners abusing Malawians

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has threatened to deport foreigners who are ill-treating Malawians by calling them names reeking of racism.

Mutharika sounded the warning on Thursday during the official launch of the construction work for Rumphi-Nyika-Chitipa Road at Bolero in Rumphi.

In his speech, Mutharika asked the Ministry of Labour to furnish his office with names of all foreigners perpetrating the vice.

“We welcome foreigners into this country. I am asking foreigners coming here to respect us. Don’t call us slaves again. Don’t call us monkeys.

“I am tired of people abusing us. We are human beings too. We are all God’s children. And this is the last warning I am giving!” said Mutharika.

He added: “I want the Ministry of Labour to give me names of companies and individuals who are abusing Malawians. I will deport them within 24hours and they will never return to Malawi.”

Mutharika’s remarks came as a response to reports that a Lilongwe based Briton Mike Harper uttered “racist” remarks against a Malawian domestic worker.

Harper is reported to have called his domestic worker a slave in a facebook post.

The post attracted mixed reactions with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) demanding an apology and his deportation.
