Power cut disrupt Parliament in Lilongwe

Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya on Monday afternoon adjourned deliberations in the August House prematurely following a power cut and the standby generator failed to start in time.

The blackout happened just after a tea break and lasted for close to 20 minutes. MPs had to use their mobile phones.

The development did not please opposition MPs who started pouring insults on President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s government and the Electricity Supply Corporation Malawi (ESCOM).

ESCOM recently announced an extension of power rationale from 6 hours to 9 hours per day causing panic among business players across the country.
