Chakwera leaves Court to attended the election of new Speaker

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has left the High Court in Lilongwe to attend the swearing in ceremony of the Speaker of Parliament.

Members of Parliament are today expected to elect new Speaker and two Deputy Speakers ahead of the official opening of the National Assembly this coming Friday.

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has endorsed former First Deputy Speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje for the position of the Speaker while MCP has endorsed Catherine Gotani Hara.

Chakwera this morning led thousands of MCP supporters in marching from Mbowe Filling Station to High Court in Lilongwe where the court is hearing an application by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to have an election case dismissed.

MCP and United Transformation Movement (UTM) are demanding for the nullification of the Presidential results on grounds that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) rigged the May 21 polls.
