MEC Given 5 Days to Collect Sworn Statements

The Constitutional Court in Lilongwe has given Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) 5 days,to collect all sworn statements from presiding officers.

The ruling follows an application by MEC for the extension of time to file and serve sworn statements on the disputed presidential election case.

When giving the ruling, the constitutional court has told the electoral body to be able to handle this exercise with the same urgency it did with the management of the May 21 polls.

On Monday, MEC asked the court to give the electoral body 14 more days for its officials to finish recording sworn statements from presiding officers, arguing they were interrupted by public interference.

The hearing of the election case is scheduled to start on July 29, in the constitutional court in Lilongwe.
