Mutharika Challenges HRDC, Opposition ‘Demos do not elect president’

President Peter has challenged the organizers of Anti-Ansah demonstration Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP and United Transformation Movement (UTM) that they will not take over his government through demonstrations.

Mutharika made the challenge on Sunday during his visit in Nsanje where he inspected the progress of the upgrade project of Nsanje-Marka road.

The emotional Mutharika said it is through the ballot that a president is elected and not through street demonstrations.

“Demos don’t elect a president, You don’t win through the courts, you win through ballots,” said emotional Mutharika.

He added: ““People voted for me. You will not take over government through demos. I won’t accept that”

UTM and MCP are seeking for nullification of the presidential results, the matter which is currently in court.

Aftermath of May 21 elections Mutharika’s presidency has been facing hiccups as he is accused of ruling illegally.

HRDC has been organizing demonstrations in the country calling for resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairwoman Jane Ansah for failing to manage elections.

However, Ansah has remained adamant as she has said she will not resign saying the court will determine her fate.
