MCP MPs Feud over Demo Fracas

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislators yesterday expressed shock with the violence which happened yesterday in Blantyre during Anti-Ansah demonstrations organized by Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) in a quest to force Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah out of office.

Interim leader of opposition in the August House Lobin Lowe said he was shocked with the behavior of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets’ actions when they invaded the peaceful match.

Lowe continued by condemning the police for firing teargas right at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) saying their actions were very unfortunate.

“For the police to fire teargas right at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital is very unfortunate. A kid under five years has died because of this. It is also unfortunate that an expectant mother collapsed,” said Lowe.

He later sympathized with HRDC member who is also chairperson for the coalition in the central region Billy Mayaya who was assaulted and injured by the suspected DPP supporters.

“Billy Mayaya was heavily wounded by DPP [cadets]. I would like the government to justify this and respond,” Lowe said.

MCP Deputy Whip, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, also said they were deeply saddened by the turn of events.
