Anti-Ansah Demos to Continue – Court Rules

The Supreme Court of Appeal has thrown out an application by the Attorney General (AG) Kalekeni Kaphale from restraining Human Rights defenders Coalition (HRDC) from holding further demonstrations.

Giving his ruling Judge Lovemore  argued that banning demonstrations would be a direct contravention of the law and also an implicit endorsement of police inefficiencies.

According to Judge Chikopa, there are better ways of dealing with violence and criminal activities that happen during the protests.

“There are in so far better ways of dealing with violence and criminality,” said Judge Chikopa.

Kaphale sought an injunction restraining HRDC from holding any other demonstrations until they (HRDC) have paid all the damages caused during the previous demonstrations.

HRDC has been organizing demonstrations calling for a resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah.

According to HRDC Ansah failed Malawians in the May tripartite elections as sh ruled in favor of President Peter Mutharika.
