Prepaid Billing System Helps BWB Collect K350 Million from Outstanding Bills

Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has managed to collect K350, 639,524 of outstanding bills from its customers from the total arrears of K672, 341,477 following the installation of prepaid billing system.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Blantyre Water Board (BWB), Evelyn Khonje said on Wednesday in Blantyre that the board has improved its revenue collection with 50 per cent.

“In terms of revenue, over 50 per cent of the arrears of the customers that have been installed with prepaid meters have been collected. This is good news considering that more prepaid meters were installed within the last 6 months.

“With the system, over K350, 639,524 of the arrears were collected from the total arrears of K672, 341, 477,” she said.

Khonje said currently the Board has managed to install 22,033 prepaid meters however the process is still ongoing.

“The 22,033 customers are using the Lapis Prepaid Meter System. The system is good because customers pay for water before use. It also assists in collecting arrears. As customers purchase water credit, those with arrears also pay for the arrears,” the PRO added.

A Chitawira resident in Blantyre, Zein Mdala said that the new billing system was good because it promotes the spirit of planning and time management.

BWB started the process of migrating of its customers from postpaid billing system to prepaid billing system as one way of improving efficiency in its revenue collection.
