Police Fire Teargas at Prison Striking Officers, Prison Officers Threaten to Retaliate

Reports reaching this publication are indicating that Malawi Police Officers are firing teargas at striking prison officers with an aim of forcing them to call off the strike.
The Junior prison officers are protesting over risk allowance in which their fellow men and women in uniform have receive in the wake of Coronavirus.
Responding to the move by police officers, Prison officers have pulled out their guns and say they will retaliate because the Police are trespassing.
In a related development, Police in Mzuzu have also invaded prison premises to stop their striking, in return , the Prison Officers have shot 15 gun shots a warning to the Police.
Meanwhile, there is commotion at Mzuzu prison as Malawi Police Service following an order for the police to take over security at the prison following the sit-in by Junior officers at the prison.
The police had to fire teargas at the protesting prison warders and they are now guarding the premise.
The armed police officers came in full force with an anti riot vehicle and three other vehicles to restore peace and order.
Prison junior officers have been staging a sit-in across the country from yesterday.
While details are still sketchy, at some point the police officers fired in the air inside the prison establishment.
Prison officers continue with their sit-in across all prisons in pursuit of better working conditions.
