Likoma Police ‘aiding’ foreigners defy covid-19 preventive measures

Police on Likoma Island are allegedly investigating reports that some of them have been taking bribes and aiding Mozambican nationals flout covid-19 preventive measures and board Malawi vessels on Lake Malawi without following procedure.

The truth came to bear after Sub Traditional Authority, Mwase mobilized members of the community to follow up a tip that some police officers were aiding business people from Mozambique board MV Ilala through the Island district to the mainland.

Likoma police spokesperson, MacClif Ngulube, said the matter has indeed been reported and is under investigation.

The government of Malawi banned cross border movement of people as a measure to prevent the further spread of the corona virus pandemic.

But the group of villagers found three police officers aiding business persons from Mozambique to load goods including cartons of dried fish onto the ship without the involvement of immigration officers.

The police officers were deployed to patrol the area that night as part of the control of human traffick against the spread of the corona virus.

Currently, Malawi has registered 358 cases of corona virus with 4 deaths and 42 recoveries.
