Seven in custody for vandalizing health facility in Mulanje

Police in Mulanje have arrested seven people for allegedly damaging property worthy over K350, 000 at Chonde Health Centre in the district.

Mulanje Police Station, Deputy Public Relations Officer (DPRO), Blessings Gama said the seven are; Shaibu Chiposola, 24, Happy Kambuti, 20, Chisomo Maliko, 20, Erason Nthamera, 20, Blessings Malekano, 35, from Chonde Village and Montfort Juma ,25, Janet Mulekano ,30, from Kululira Village, all from Senior Chief Mthiramanja in Mulanje

“On June 1, 2020, a certain woman was involved in a road accident along Thyolo-Mulanje Road. Some people then just dropped her on the corridor of the Health Centre without informing staff and later, it was discovered that the woman died,” he explained, adding that this angered the suspects who started throwing stones at the health facility claiming health personnel failed to assist the victim.

“They smashed window panes and destroyed other property at the facility,” Gama said adding that Police started investigations that led to the arrest of the seven suspects on Saturday night.

The DPRO pointed out that the suspects would appear in Court soon to answer the charge of malicious damage contravening Section 344 of the penal code.
