TUM asks gvt to pay risk allowances as schools are near to open

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has appealed to government to consider paying them risk allowances as schools are expected to re-open next month.
The government through the National Planning Taskforce recommended that all learning institutions re-open on 13 July, 2020.
Concerns have however been raised on the safety of students considering that the country is registering new cases of Covid-19 on a daily basis.
Speaking to Capital FM, TUM Secretary General Charles Kumchenga indicates that there is need for the government to allocate risk allowances for teachers just like other workers.

On Tuesday last week, the taskforce on re-opening of schools recommended to the Presidential Taskforce on Coronavirus, that all schools, Colleges and Universities be re-opened on 13th July, 2020.

According to the taskforce chaired by Professor Lewis Dzimbiri, the schools will be re-opened with some conditions and details of the conditions will be released soon.

The Presidential taskforce on COVID-19 is yet to respond on the matter.
