TUM Against Child Labour In Tobacco Farms In Dowa

The Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has expressed concern with increased levels of child labour in tobacco farms in Dowa, attributing it to prolonged school closure.

TUM’s Program Manager, Pilirani Kamaliza has said many school going girls and boys are now working in farms particularly in Kabwinja Zone in Traditional Authority Chakhaza and that many girls have been married off.

Meanwhile, some chiefs have called on the authorities to consider reopening schools to reduce number of girls getting pregnant and married during this COVID-19 period.

TUM is engaging parents, Chiefs and teachers in Tradtional Authority Chakhaza to help fight child labour in tobacco farms.
