Centre For Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has bemoaned the continuous arrests that have been made since the Tonse Alliance took power on June 23, 2020.
This has been said in a press statement seen by Face of Malawi reporter which was signed by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa.
According to CDEDI most Malawians are living in fear as others are thinking that the country is slowly sliding back to one party era.
“Malawians are now living in fear, while others are beginning to think that the country is slowly sliding back to the one-party era where arrests and political persecution was the order of the day.” Said Namiwa.
Namiwa cited that the fears have been leveled following the tendency of arresting one suspect for more than once on different charges rather than arresting them once and being told the list of charges they require to Answer.
“Especially with the tendencies by the current administration, of consecutive arrests of suspects for more than four (4) times on different charges, rather than arresting them once and being told a list of charges they require to answer,” he said.
The remarks reflect what private bodyguard for former President Peter Mutharika, Norman Chisale faced as he was arrested for 3 consecutive times on different accounts.
Meanwhile, Chisale has been released following the order from the Supreme Court of Appeal which ordered that he (Chisale) should be released unconditionally.
