Toyota Malawi employees down tools

Toyota Malawi employees across the country are today staging a sit-in demanding a 20 percent salary increment.

The development follows management’s decision not to effect any salary increment this year due to financial challenges due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the country which led to partial rockdown.

a visit to Toyota Malawi branch in Blantyre, faceofmalawi reporter found employees chanting outside the companies premises while carrying tree branches.

The workers vowed to only resume work once their grievances are addressed.

In Mzuzu, the workers have closed the entrance to the service centre with tree branches

One of the workers, Robert Ng’ona, says every year management gives them an average increment of of 10% but the workers this year demanded at least a 45% increase due to increased cost of living.

He said the company turned down the request.
