HRDC asks ACB to probe LWB over MK29 million paid to BEAM meant for construction of sculptures

The Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) over funds paid to Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust meant for the construction of sculptures at Parliament and Capital Hotel roundabout in the capital Lilongwe.

This has been disclosed in a letter addressed to ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba jointly signed by HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence and HRDC National Coordinator Luke Tembo dated November 1, 2020.

According to the letter, HRDC says the involvement of LWB in the construction of sculptures as abuse of office hence asking the ACB to probe the matter.

“It is alleged that LWB paid MK29, 295,100.00 to Gaston Art for construction of Sculptures at Parliament and Capital Hotel roundabout. It is alleged that these sculptures were constructed on behalf of BEAM Trust, a charity organisation apparently run by former first lady Gertrude Mutharika. These payment were done under corporate social responsibility.

“We are of the view that this was an abuse of office,” reads in part the letter.
