HRDC Asks Chakwera to Reverse MPs Pay Rise

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked President Lazarus Chakwera to rescind the decision which is seen increasing salaries and monthly allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs) by one hundred percent.

Last week the country news outlets covered a story which revealed that Parliamentarians have received a hike in their monthly wages form K1.1 million to K2.2 million.

HRDC made the call during an engagement with president Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in the Capital Lilongwe on Monday.

Confirming meeting Chakwera, Luke Tembo, national coordinator for HRDC the decision to raise salaries for MPs has come at a wrong time and inconsiderate considering that a lot of Malawians are facing challenges including hunger.

“That is true we met the president on the double increase of the monthly allowance and salaries for MPs,” Tembo said.

Tembo has also asked government to justify the hike and why perks for other civil servants have only gotten a small margin.

“We also want government to justify the hike and why perks for other civil servants have gotten only a small margin,” he said.

Ever since the news was brought for public consumption government has stayed number of the matter and is yet to comment.
