COVID-19 hits polytechnic, students asked to vacate the campus by 5pm

There is confusion at The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, over a memorandum issued yesterday in which management said Covid-19 cases had been registered at the institution.

As a result, management asked students that reside in college hostels to leave the premises by 5pm today.

However, some of the students have questioned the decision, wondering why they should be forced to go home before being tested for coronavirus.

When President Lazarus Chakwera announced the immediate closure of schools last week, he said boarders were exempted from the directive.

Meanwhile, Polytechnic Students Union President Kunozga Mlowoka, in a different memo, says management is not aware that some students have not been tested.

He, therefore, asks students that are yet to be tested for coronavirus to remain on campus until they undergo the test.
