Veteran Journalist Tony Kandiero laid to rest

Minister of Culture and Tourism Michael Usi on Tuesday led Malawians in paying last respect to veteran Journalist and former diplomat Tony Kandiero.

Kandiero was laid to rest at Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) cemetery in Blantyre.

In eurology, Usi said the country has lost a great son who served it in various capacities with his utmost diligence.

“The nation is mourning. President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice Dr Saulos Chilima are saddened by the demise of Ambassador Tony Kandiero. He served this country diligently starting with MBC and later as a diplomat. Perhaps what is critical at this time is to draw lessons from his life of being selfless, patriotic and dedicated to duty,” said Usi.

Family representative, Tendai Chirwa said the Kandiero family has lost a pillar that was crucial to the progress of the clan.

“He was a father, uncle, brother and grandfather to many. We all looked upon him as a source of inspiration it’s hard to come to terms with his demise,” mourned Chirwa.

As earlier reported Kandiero launched his career with MBC serving the Corporation for 23 years and as its General Manager for eight years (1980 -1988). Other than the numerous diplomatic posts he held during Dr Kamuzu Banda’s administration, he also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and as Chairman of Press Trust of his many portfolios.

He is survived by a wife, five children and two grandchildren.
