The Country’s Presidential Taskforce on Covid 19 has warned that companies aiding the entry of illegal immigrants into the country, risk closure.
The development follows reports of large numbers of foreign nationals entering the country illegally for jobs amid fears of spreading the Covid 19 pandemic.
In a recent event, 16 out of 60 Indian nationals who arrived in the country to work at Salima Sugar Company as expatriates, tested positive to Covid 19.
The government has since sent samples to South Africa to ascertain the actual variant of this virus, as India has the most deadly variant.
Co-Chairperson of the Covid Taskforce Khumbize Chiponda has also revealed that the Ministry of Labour will be vetting those deemed to be expatriates.
Meanwhile, in the related development, the Malawi Police Service (MPS), the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has over the weekend arrested 156 foreigners who have been living illegally in the country.
Speaking following the development on Tuesday, April 4, Deputy National Public Relations Officer Senior Superintendent Peter Kalaya said the group was arrested in both rural and urban areas across the country where most of them were doing business.
The arrests come barely a few weeks after the Malawi Government ordered refugees to relocate to Dzaleka Refugees Camp.
