Reckless driver fined K300,000 for causing death in Karonga

The Karonga First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 41-year-old driver, Numel Ngulube to pay K300,000 fine or in default to serve ten months in prison for causing death by reckless driving.

The court heard through police prosecutor, Sub-Inspector Harrison Mtambalika that on June 4, 2021 at Tenenthe area, along Chitipa-Karonga M26 Road, Numel Ngulube being a driver of motor vehicle registration number 30 SC 7, Nissan cab star lorry, recklessly caused the death of Happy Kanyimbo.

Sub Inspector Mtambalika further told the court that causing death by reckless driving is a serious offence which attracts a maximum fine of K600,000 or in default three years imprisonment with hard labour.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Julius Kalambo agreed with the state about the seriousness of the offence. He therefore ordered Ngulube to pay K300,000 fine or in default to serve ten months in prison.
