Pressure forces govt to make changes on Constitution Amendment Bill, removes ‘Judges Contract’ clause

Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo has announced that government has removed the ‘Judges Contract’ clause in the Constitution Amendment Bill.

Mvalo further says, the retirement age for Chief Justice has been maintained at 65 and not 70 as it was being proposed in the Amendment.

According to Mvalo, this is after a meeting that the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament had with the Malawi Law Society, Solicitor General and the Judiciary itself.

Legal Affairs Chair Peter Dimba says at the meeting they agreed that the Clause to introduce contracts for Judges be deleted as it could compromise the Judiciary’s independence.
