Police Gives Reason Behind Namiwa’s Arrest

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has said they arrested members of Center for Democracy and Economic Initiative (CDEDI) for failing to comply with a prohibition order.

National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera said this in a press statement seen by Face of Malawi.

Kadadzera said that they are currently keeping 11 people including CDEDI’s Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa.

“Police in Lilongwe, yesterday arrested Mr Silvester Namiwa of CDEDI and ten others for failing to comply with the prohibition order from the City Council, which is contrary to section 99 of the Police Act,” said Kadadzera.

Kadadzera added; “Mr Namiwa’s notification to hold vigils at the Parliament building in Lilongwe was refused by the City Council.”

According to the police publicist, Namiwa did not comply with the prohibition order and attempted to conduct the vigils.

Police has therefore said that will give an update on when Mr Namiwa and 10 others will be taken to court for prosecution.
