Namiwa, Others Plead Not Guilty

Center for Democracy and Economic Initiative (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa and his co-accused have pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against them.

Namiwa and his colleagues are currently appearing before a Magistrate Court in Lumbadzi in the outskirts of the capital Lilongwe.

The CDEDI members were nabbed on Wednesday after they failed to comply to the prohibition order by the Lilongwe City Council.

Namiwa was leading a group of people to hold vigils at Parliament building demanding answers on how the K93 loan authorization bill found its way to the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the court has now adjourned for ten minutes for bail ruling in a case involving civil rights activist Sylvester Namiwa and ten others.

Counsel for the defense Taulo has argued that demonstrations are a human right and has pleaded with the court not to accept barring conditions or gagging orders.

State lawyer Mangani did not object to the bail application but he asked the court to stop the accused from doing any gatherings during the bail.
