CDEDI On Police IG’s Neck Over Nepotism

Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has given the Inspector General of Police George Kainja the ultimatum of 7 days to address the issue of nepotism which it said has engulfed the hierarchy of Malawi Police Service (MPS).

In a press statement made available to Face of Malawi, CDEDI executive director Sylvester Namiwa accused Kainja of lying that the high command of police has people from the south which he said it is not the case.

“The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has noted with deep concern glaring nepotism being manifested in the Malawi Police Service (MPS) under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IG) Dr. George Kainja. And hereby gives the IG seven (7) days to address the anomaly,” said Namiwa.

He then argued that the current police top positions have no personnel from the southern region; claiming out of all the 12 commissioners, 3 are from the northern region while 9 from central region including the Police IG himself.

“Our investigations show that there is no police officer from the Southern Region in the current Police High Command, which comprises three officers from the north, and 10 including the IG and his two deputies from the Central Region,” he said.

The police IG is yet to comment on the matter.
