Woman slapped 12 months jail sentence for dumping newly born baby in a pit latrine

The Mkukula First Grade Magistrate Court in Dowa has Sentenced 29 year-old Getrude Chimoyo to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for dumping her new-born baby in a pit latrine.

Prosecutor Jolly Kamazilu told the court that Chimoyo gave birth to a baby girl on August 31 2021 at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe after using a fake name and address.

He said that thereafter, the convict sneaked out of the hospital and immediately wrapped the baby in a black plastic bag and dumped her in a pit latrine at Lilongwe Demonstration Primary School where students discovered the baby and informed Kanengo Police Station, who together with the school’s management, managed to rescue the baby.

Appearing before court, the convict pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against her.

First Grade Magistrate Thomson Midiasi sentenced the convict to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.

Chimoyo hails from Mwadenje Village in Traditional Authority Chimutu’s area in Lilongwe District.
