HRCC Calls On Parastatals To Operate Independently

Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has called on parastatals in the country to refrain from political pressure and work independently.

HRCC chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba made the call.

According to the human rights grouping, the tendency by various public institutions of supporting political parties as a breeding ground for corruption and a disservice to the populace.

For many years, many statutory bodies, especially water and electricity providers, have been involved in ruling party activities particularly through ferrying supporters to political rallies.

Observers believe the practice results in wastage of resources, slows down service provision and unfairly pushes high water and electricity tariffs to the consumer owing to the political pressure.
