Lightning kills three people in Lilongwe

Lightning has killed three young people and injured another at Nkhuto Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe District.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 16:00 hours.

The victims have been identified as Esmie Tomas, 17, Kalichero Banda, 12, and Owen Samie, 12.

They were playing with their friends outside before the rains at around 16:00 hours.

But when the rains started they all rushed for shelter in one of the nearest houses.

While still inside, lighting struck and hit the four victims and they collapsed.
The victims, who include a four months old girl, were rushed to Nathenje Health Centre before proceeding to Mtenthera Health Centre for medical attention.
Unfortunately, three of the victims were pronounced dead upon arrival while the four months old baby was treated as an outpatient.
Postmortem by the said heath centre established that death was due to electrical shock secondary to lightning.
