Leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South has asked President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to declare some parts of the South affected by Cyclone ‘Ana’ as place of disaster.
Nankhumwa said this after cheering some people affected by Cyclone ‘Ana’ which has displaced over 2500 Malawians.
In his speech Nankhumwa hinted that the people affected by the floods need urgent support.
“It is my humble appeal to President Lazarus Chakwera and his government to quickly render assistance to hundreds of people who have been displaced and lost literally everything.
“The President may also wish to officially declare a State of Disaster in order to facilitate and attract speedy humanitarian assistance for reconstruction and rehabilitation. Many people will need sustained assistance and support from well-wishers, the government, and our international partners in order to get back on their feet,” said Nankhumwa
He added: “My appeal also goes to fellow Malawians that have the capacity to help ‘thy neighbour’ to do so in this hour of need.
“I wish to state that this is one of the worst natural disasters that Malawi has ever experienced. Cyclone Ana came when Malawians were already grappling with other crises such as the sky-rocketing inflation and general social and economic downturn, and the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Effort to talk to State House Press officer Anthony Kasunda proved futile.
