Sentencing of man suspected of impregnating his biological daughter in Mzuzu set for Feb 17

The Principal Resident Magistrate Court sitting at Luwinga in Mzuzu has set February 17th to sentence a 42 year-old man, Kelvin Kayira who defiled his 14 year-old biological daughter and got her pregnant.

The victim currently has a one year-old baby fathered by her own dad.

Principal Resident Magistrate, Peter Kandulu reserved the sentencing after defense lawyer Daniel Nyasulu requested the court to give them time to properly write their submissions before the court passes the verdict.

Kayira has been denying the charge to the extent that through his lawyer ordered a DNA test but when results came out positive, the accused chose to remain silent.

Meanwhile, with funding from the Centre for Disease Control CDC, the Malawi Interfaith Aids Association MIAA says it will continue to support the judiciary in hearing of such cases through mobile courts as they have proven to be helpful in speeding up cases and sensitisations, according to head of programs Ulemu Kusapali.
