Ugandan Novelist Nabbed For Insulting President Yoweri Museveni, Son Flees Into Exile; Alleges He Is In Malawi

Ugandan award winning author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija who was arrested for insulting President Yoweri Museveni, is reportedly to have fled the country weeks after he was released on bail from custody.

Rukirabashaija was arrested in December and charged with offensive communication for making unflattering remarks about President Yoweri Museveni and his son on Twitter.

His lawyer confirmed that his client had booted out of the country but could not reveal where he had gone.

Hours after his alleged escape hits the internet, Rukirabashaija updated a statement on his social media insunuating that he is in Malawi.

However, no confirmation has been made by authorities from both countries.

“Hello, Malawi,” wrote Rukirabashaija on his Facebook page and later put an illustration of a witch flying with caption “How Rukirabachwezi reached Malawi without a passport.”

However, it is reported that Uganda’s army General Muhoozi Kainerugaba who happens to be President Museveni’s son reached out to Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame asking him to help looking for Rukirabashaija, unfortunately, Kagame said the novelist is not in his country.

It is alleged that during his stay in prison following to his arrest, the author was subjected to torture of all kinds, which nearly costs him his life.

However, Ugandan authorities denied the allegations.

It is not yet known how he left the country and where he has gone to since his travelling documents were confiscated from him the time he was being granted bail.

Recently, Rukirabashaija had sought permission to leave the country to seek treatment for injuries he says he sustained during his recent month in detention at an unknown location.

But the court refused to give the novelist his passport.

Meanwhile, Ugandans have hailed Rukirabashaija for managing to beat the system by fleeing the country.
