Human Rights Defender Calls Adequate Support For Prisons Owned School In Mzuzu

Center for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) Executive Director Victor Mhango has challenged Malawi Prisons Service (MPS) Authority to ensure that the newly introduced secondary school at Mzuzu is well furnished.

Mhango appealed to the authorities that the school must be given adequate financial and technical support.

The service announced on its Facebook page that it has introduced Mzuzu Girls Private Secondary School which is situated within Mzuzu Prison Campus.

According to the statement, the school will be accommodating all female inmates who will express interest to pursue secondary school education.

“Female Prisoners will access education at this facility for free and will be provided with all the learning materials,” read part of the statement.

In his remarks, Malawi Prisons service Spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba said the introduction of the education facility is aimed at promoting equal access to education.
