Malawi Govt Mum On Ukraine Crisis

Malawi government has asked fro more time to comment on how it is planning to secure the safety of Malawians living in Ukraine following the ongoing crisis with Russia.

Different African countries including neighboring Zambia have started repatriating their citizens in Ukraine, but Malawi has not made an inch.

The Ministry of Foreign affairs is yet to furnish the general public with a position on the impact of the Russian situation, that’s in both safety of people and other areas.

When contacted for a comment on the status of Malawians that may be in Ukraine, Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo, asked for more time.

Earlier this week Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a “special military operation” in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.

Putin said Russia did not plan to occupy Ukraine, but warned that Moscow’s response would be “instant” if anyone tries to take on Russia.

Ukraine said that “Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine”.

According to Information sourced from a United Nations COMTRADE database, Malawi imports from Ukraine, and in 2020 alone the country made imports worth over US$3.24 million.
