Govt to embark on compulsory education

Government has made a commitment to prepare for the delivery of Compulsory Basic Education (CBE) in order to improve the education sector in the country.

Minister of Education, Agnes NyaLonje, made the remarks in Lilongwe on Wednesday during a press briefing under the banner Government Faces the Press.

She said the development means moving from the current position of 89 percent net enrollment in primary schools to 100 percent compulsory enrollment.

“In addition to building classrooms and schools, recruiting and training more teachers and procuring teaching and learning materials, my ministry is undertaking a number of strategic activities to ensure effective implementation of Compulsory Basic Education,” she said.

Alignment of international legal instruments related to provision of compulsory primary education, further curriculum development to improve literacy and numeracy of learners, creation of Teachers Council to enhance the professional standing, status and quality of teachers among others are the strategic activities lined up for the smooth implementation of CBE.

Minister of Information and Digitisation, Gospel Kazako, has high expectations that CBE will succeed.

He said government will ensure to provide required resources so that CBE is implemented thereby improving the sector.
