DPP Against Peace and Unity Bill, Says Mtambo Should Not Be Involved In Establishment Of Peace Commission

Members of parliament have started their day by discussing the Peace and Unity Bill that has been presented by Minister of National Unity Timothy Mtambo.

According to Mtambo, the bill will facilitate the establishment of the Peace and Unity Commission which is expected to establish a framework to promote peace and unity

Mtambo said the bill will enable the country to resolve conflicts through negotiations and arbitration at manageable levels as such, he asked the legislators to debate and pass the Bill for the interest of the public.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson on legal matters, Bright Msaka, said the party welcomes the Bill, but has asked for some changes in the peace.

For example, he said the minister being a politician, is not independent and most likely not impartial, and that as such, he should not have the powers to establish the commission.

Msaka said the commission must be independent and a selection process of individuals forming the body should be done by Parliament not the minister as it is in the Bill.
