Court reserves ruling in Kasambara’s case

The Supreme Court sitting in Lilongwe has reserved its ruling in an appeal case in which former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Ralph Kasambara and two others are challenging their conviction in the conspiracy and attempted murder case.

The High Court, in 2016, convicted and sentenced Kasambala alongside Pika Manondo and Former Malawi Defence Force Officer, Macdonald Kumwembe, for conspiracy and attempting to murder former Budget Director, Paul Mphwiyo.

The trio is challenging their conviction and sentence for lack of sufficient evidence.

Lawyer for Manondo and Kumwembe asked the Supreme Court to quash the conviction and free the appealants.

Both the defence and the State were accorded an hour each to submit arguments before a panel of seven Supreme Court Judges, led by Justice Healey Potani.

The court has since adjourned the case and is expected to deliver judgment in due course.
