MHRC to meet DPP over Chizuma’s summoning

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC)has said it will meet Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni on matters surrounding the intended interrogation of Director of Anti-Corruption Bureau Martha Chizuma by the Malawi Police Service.

Chairperson of the commission Scader Louis has said this in a statement.

Louis said MHRC is following with keen interest developments surrounding Chizuma who is now on police radar over a leaked telephone conversation she reportedly had with a confidante.

She has urged the police to ensure that their conduct in dealing with the matter follows due process and does not jeopardise Chizuma’s security.

Chizuma was summoned for an investigation interview at National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe today.

But the interview was cancelled at the 11th hour over reports that some concerned citizens were mobilizing to demonstrate against the police for summoning the ACB boss.

“The Malawi Police Service has learnt that some citizens are mobilising to demonstrate against the MPS for complying with a court order to interview the director general of the Anti-Corruption Bureau , Martha Chizuma, as a person of interest in a matter about which the court needs to establish facts.

“In the meantime, to create room for the building of public trust in the processes the MPS follows in compliance with court orders, the summon to interview Ms. Chizuma is suspended until further notice,” reads in part the statement.
