Speaker Gotani Hara endorses Chakwera as 2025 MCP torchbearer

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) First Deputy Secretary General Catherine Gotani Hara who is also Speaker of Parliament has endorsed President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera as the party’s torchbearer in the forthcoming 2025 general election.

Hara made the endorsement on Saturday during Tambala Night Fundraising held at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe.

In her speech Hara said as the party’s Secretariat, they are geared and have fastened their belts in making sure the current President for the party continues serving in his capacity as its torchbearer come 2025.

“For the Bible says, ‘Whatsoever you shall bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven.’ We are here binding that come 2025 our President is Chakwera, and what we have bound here, no-one shall loosen it, for it has been fully bound.” Said Hara while attracting ululations from people who gathered at the event.

She hinted that the party is there to stay in government, for God is by its side. But she was quick to say for this to happen there is a need for its members to hold hands and move together as a unit by believing in themselves.

Hara’s endorsement of Chakwera comes barely months after MCP Second Vice President for the North Harry Mkandawire also endorsed Chakwera.

But Mkandawire’s endorsement received backlash with some MCP top officials led by Alex Major demanding for his firing.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera is yet to comment on the matter.
