Mayani Secondary School students granted bail

The Dedza Senior Resident Magistrate and Dedza First Grade Magistrate Court’s have granted bail to Mayani Secondary School students who were arrested for damaging school property at their school and also for damaging Mayani police Unit.

The first group appeared before the Senior Resident Magistrate and comprised of 11 students above 18 years. Six of them pleaded guilty to damaging school property while five denied. The six students who pleaded guilty to damaging the school have been fined K20,000 each in default serve six months imprisonment with hard labour but have all paid the fines.

They however denied damaging Mayani Police Unit and have since been granted bail, scheduled to appear in court after sitting for the Malawi National Examinations Board exams.

Eight minors appeared before the First Grade Magistrate court, with one student pleading guilty to both counts of damaging the school and the police Unit. Three have admitted to damaging the school only and denied damaging the police, with five denying all the charges.

The minor’s case has been adjourned to next week Tuesday and are currently on bail.
